Lent is the time of year when this phrase is commonly heard “What are you giving up for lent”. If you don’t know, Lent is the 40 days (minus Sundays) before Easter that is set aside in the church calendar to be a time of introspection, reflection, repentance, preparation and renewal. And it is a traditional practice in the observation of Lent to ‘give up’ something as a kind of sacrifice.
