Dirty Little Secrets We Should Know

If you are like me, you never throw away beauty products until they are done. Is that bad or good? Beauty products don’t carry a “best by” date, so how is one supposed to know how long to hang on to these products.  Ah! There is a built-in expiration date. So here is the skinny on  how long you should hang-on to these precious items.

Mascara & Liquid Eyeliner: Each time you return the brush to the tube, you’re reintroducing bacteria into the item.  These products have the shortest shelf life.  They should be replaced every 3 to 4 months even if the tube is not empty.

Liquid Foundation: When stored away from heat, these items can remain stable for up to a year.  If your skin is sensitive or acne-prone, don’t every dip your fingers into the bottle.  Always apply with a sponge or brush and never double dip.

Lipsticks & Gloss: The wrong color may spoil your mood but unlike liquid based makeup, these items are less likely to sprout bacteria. It’s safe to hold on to your gloss for at least 6 months and lipsticks for up to a year.

Powder Based:  These are the most durable of all the beauty products or your energizer bunny! Unless they have a funny odor, or the color as changed, you can safely use powder based products for 18 months to 2 years.

Scents: Your favorite scent maybe timeless but  having that bottle of perfume sitting on your vanity could start to turn on you.  Yes, fragrances will last for 2 years when stored in a dark, cool place.

Lotions:  Body lotions are usually good for up to 2 years.  Lotions packaged in a pump container are best because they help to stave off bacteria.

When you open a beauty product for the first time, write the date on the product. It will help you keep track of how long you’ve had it  so you’ll know when it’s time to get rid of it.
